Based on official USWB/NWS data. Downtown Airport records since 1972 are noted with an asterisk. POMP is the Probability Of Measurable Precipitation for the day....TPoP is the probability of audible thunder for the day.....POMS is the Probability Of Measurable Snowfall for the day, all based on the 1888 to 1996 period.                             NOTABLE WEATHER EVENTS

Dec 3/4 1898 A snowstorm gave 7.2" on the 3rd and 0.8 on the 4th.
Dec 4 All of the December 4th measurable snows came before 1932.
Dec 5 1942 The one-day snowfall of 8.5 inches is the third heaviest
for the month.
Dec 6 1980 The 2.82" of rain is the one day record for December.
Dec 7 1980 The second consecutive day with more than two inches of
rain (2.08). Both days had thunderstorms.
Dec 8 1917 The average temperature for the day was zero, the
earliest in the cool season that this has been recorded.
Dec 10 1985 A winter storm left Kansas City under nearly two inches
of snow, sleet and freezing rain. Because of subsequent cold weather, the
mixture stayed on the ground until Christmas Eve. That same year freezing
rain was reported the first three days of December and each day between
the 9th and 15th.
Dec 13 2000 Snow began shortly after midnight and continued until
6pm with a total of 7" reported at both KCI and Pleasent hill. Prior
to this snowfall there had not been measurable snow on the 13th since 1945.
Dec 14 A severe winter storm buried Kansas City under 9 to 13
inches of snow. The snow began early in the day and didn't quit until
early the next morning. The one-day total of 9.7 inches is the record
for December while the two-day total is the second heaviest since 1888.
Dec 15/16 1989 The beginning of the coldest week or record and
it still wasn't officially winter! The low on the 15th of -16 broke the
old record by 12 degrees and the low on the 16th of -14 broke the old
record by 9 degrees. Yet, colder weather was to come.
Dec 17/18 1945 The two-day total was 9.5 inches, the fourth heav-
iest for the month of December.
Dec 18 1945 The third significant snow in a week left 9.5 inches
on the ground and made travel in Kansas City hazardous.
Dec 18/19/20 1983 Three straight nights with new record lows at
KCI of -15/-18/-17. On the 21st it was only -10.
Dec 22 1989 The low temperature of 23 below is the lowest ever
recorded here since 1888. With the daytime high 8 below, the average
temperature was minus 15. There was heavy damage to pipes and plants
and many furnaces could not keep the homes warm even though they operated
non-stop.
Dec 23 1989 Once again the temperature dropped to a minus 23.
After sunrise the cold abated and the plumbers were busy repairing
waterline breaks.
Dec 23/24 1918 Heavy snow that began on the 23rd (2.7") kept
on through the 24th(9.5"). This was the heaviest two-day snowfall for
the month of December (since 1888).
Dec 25 1983 Kansas City's coldest Christmas morning with a minus
16 and the 4th (of 6) records set in December 1983. The average low for
the month was 6.1 degrees, more than 15 degrees below normal.
Dec 25 The last Christmas Day with an inch or more of new snow
was in 1962 (1.3").
Dec 31 1978 Revelers had a bad time after three days of snow
gave a total of 10.7 inches.
Dec 31 1984 This New Year's Eve wasn't much better after a potent
mixture of freezing rain, sleet and snow.
