Jan 1 1974   The average temperature for the day was a minus 6, 
the only January 1st since 1889 to have an average below zero.
Jan 1 1911   An outbreak of artic air caused the temperature in
Kansas City to plunge from 48 degrees at noon to 3 degrees below zero
at midnight.  
Jan 2 1993   Freezing rain continued through most of the day and
turned greater Kansas City into a skating rink. Fortunately this was a
Saturday, following a holiday, and relatively few people had to travel.
Jan 2 1979   The average temperature for the day was a minus one.
The only January 2nd with a below zero average temperature.
Jan 2 1973   Another freezing rain day left ice as much as an inch
and a half thick. 30,000 residents were without power, some as long as
two weeks.
Jan 3 1982   Kansas City was blanketed with up to 10 inches of
snow, including 7.8 inches at the Downtown airport.
Jan 3 1919   The average temperature was eight degrees below
zero. This was the only January 3rd with a below zero average temperature.
Jan 4th has not had any heavy snow days, greater than 4 inches, 
since records began in 1889, nor has it had a day with an average 
temperature below zero.
Jan 5 1962 had 10.1 inches of snow. 
Jan 9 1993  A powdery snow of 9.5 inches added to the two prev-
ious days snow to give a total of more than a foot. Once again luck
helped since it hit on a Saturday.
Jan 9 1930 The heaviest one-day January snowfall with 12.8 inches.
Jan 10 1982 The "Siberian express" sent the temperature down to
a minus 17, the coldest reading in Kansas City since 1912. 
Jan 11 1912 Northerly winds gusting to 40 mph combined with sub-
zero temperatures to give a windchill reading of 70 degrees below!
Jan 12 1912 The low was a minus 20, the high a minus 6.
Jan 13 1979 The record snow was measured at the Downtown airport.
KCI had only 4.5 inches. Some areas of the city had a 20 inch snow
cover as a result of earlier snowfalls as well.
Jan 16th has never had a heavy snow for the day, although there
have been many times with heavy snow on the ground from earlier
snowfalls.
Jan 18 1962  Nearly a foot of snow fell and it continued on to
the 19th with a two day total of 14.0 inches.
Jan 20 1985  Strong winds and cold temperatures gave brutal
wind chills as low as a minus 70.
Jan 21 1958 A snowstorm that began on the 20th ended, with a
two day total of 14.6 inches. This is the heaviest January storm total
of record since 1889.
Jan 23 1967 The temperature rose to a record 73 degrees and 
that night intense thunderstorms hit the city. Three days later the
city was blanketed with three inches of snow.
Jan 24 1967 An early afternoon tornado formed in northeastern
Jackson County and crossed into Ray County hitting Orrick. There were
two deaths and 18 injuries. The tornado was rated an F3/3/2 on the
Fujita/Pearson scale.
Jan 24 1950  The temperature climbed to 75 degrees, the January
record for any day, but within a day dropped 50 degrees and another
20 degrees in the next 36 hours.
Jan 26/27 1997 A two-day snowfall produced 7.0 inches of snow at KCI.
Jan 26 1967 Thunderstorms produced sleet and freezing rain as
well as snow.
Jan 28th has not had a snowfall of two inches or more.
Jan 29,30,31,2002 The biggest ice storm in Kansas City history began on the 29th
and lasted until the 31st.  Over 370,000 homes were without power. 1 to 1.5 inches of ice 
accumulated on trees and power lines. Many of the trees in the metro were damaged, 
which delayed the emergence of spring leaves.
